Ford 800 question

Hey y'all here is the question of the day.

Looking at a tractor for sale I'm thinking of buying.

It's been farmerized so here is how it's currently configured.

173ci red tiger gas motor. "820" is stamped on the block above the serial number.

The tranny is either a 4 or 5 speed... Don't remember which, only took a quick look at it.

The rear end has a PTO... Also has the lower arms of the three point are attached to the bottom of the rear end but no lift. No hydraulic controls. Just a flat piece bolted to the rear end with a seat on it.

So here's the question... Can I swap out the top cover assembly above the rear end and just "drop in" a top cover/ hydraulic pump lift assembly?

If I'm able to that would make this either a 860 or 850 depending on the tranny. Going to look at it again tomorrow.

Anyone have any thoughts on if it canbe done?

Yes.

You will need to add the hydraulic lift cover assembly, the engine mounted hydraulic pump and the hydraulic manifold.

Not too big of a job.

$$$$$$$$ will be larger than the job

If it's really an 820 and you add pump, manifold and hydraulic deck, you'll in affect have an 840. 17[b:15a2b9426a]2[/b:15a2b9426a] cu in red tiger engine, 4 speed transmission and non live PTO.

Yeah that's what I was a lil worried about the $$$$ for the hydraulics to "transform" it into a 840.

I think I got some room in the budget to make it work.

It's got new rims front and rear. The tires are very cracked from sitting out in the weather but all have lots a tread and all hold air... Been tubed all around.

New hood, new grill, new lower dog leg hood panels, rear fenders are ok... Need work but fixable.

It comes with a Ford step through loader with wide bucket that I am on the fence as to wether to keep or not. Loader is in ok shape... Been welded repaired here and there, no leaks, needs one hose, good Rams.

Was told the engine runs fine and should start right up with a new battery. No smoking, no knocking, no leaks. Really clean looking motor.

Price is set at $500

And it's only two miles down the road from where I live.

anyone have any advice on what models tractors I can look to for parts to get the hydraulic lift parts? Will any of the "hundred series" fords work or only lift systems from the 800's?

The hydraulic parts from any model in the 600, 700, 800 or 900 series that has hydraulics should work fine. The pumps and lift covers were all the same. The transmissions and PTO options varied between models within the series but they all used the same hydraulic systems. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that the lift linkage and/or the lower arms would be different on the row crop (700 & 900) series, but that's the only differences that I am aware of.

oh boy.... I was hoping to hear that!!! I'm ready for the next project now. Definitely going to pick up the tractor first thing tomorrow!

I may even swap out the guts of the tranny while I'm swaping the hydraulics too and basically "build" myself a 860. I have been wanting a 860 for the longest time! Time to get to work now

I'm pretty sure that you won't be able to do that. The 4 speed transmission has a completely different casing from the 5 speed so the guts won't swap. You would need to get a complete donor 5 speed transmission, and while you're at it, get one from a 660 or 860 including the flywheel and clutch, as the clutches and internals are different between the live and non-live PTO 5 speed transmission versions.

Correct you are. I hafta look a little more into that part of the project.

There is a guy in town here with a 900 and I know he was able to do some kind of swap so that in the end he now has a 900 series with an independent live PTO. Ill have to pay him a visit and pick his brain on how he did it and what I'm going to have to hunt down for donor parts.

Thanks for the heads up on the tranny swap.

On another question about this same project...

This tractor has that funny kind of transmission where you pull up on the shifter lever for hi range gears and push down on it for low range gears...

Anyone have any experiences with them, advice, or things to check or look out for? I'm only used to just the regular old tranny on the 9n's so this is something totally new to me.

Thanks again

For $500 I would buy it even if you just
parted it out. The rims are worth most of
that.
One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet
on the hydraulic end of things is the
hydraulic tubes that go through the
transmission and the internal tubes in the
rear end that route the oil from the
reservoir to the pump and back to the lift
cover. I don't know what all was deleted
there but it could be a lot of cost and
parts hunting to acquire all that stuff
and then install it.
I suspect there's more to it than just
adding a pump and lift cover.
By the way, those parts from an 01 or 000
Series should fit too. Wouldn't have to be
just a 00 Series.
A small point here: there is Live PTO and
there is Independent PTO. They are not the
same. A 55-64 Ford with a crash box could
have Live but not Independant.
One thing for sure is Any Hundred or
Thousand with working hydraulics would
sure eat any N's lunch and if you got it
all put together you would wonder why you
waited so long to upgrade.

Hey thanks very much for the good info.

The seller assures me if I drop a good battery in it and gas it up it will fire right up. No engine issues, leaks, smokes, noises, etc.

So I figure how can you beat $500 for what will be a running tractor with a loader? Seems like a good deal to me.

I am thinking I will get it running and use it around the farm while I spend some time sourcing hydraulic parts and make a winter project out of it. Mabye even add a power steering kit.

Thanks very much for all the help and advice everyone. I will be posting pictures of it when I get it home later today.

I figure also too that the mint condition hood, hood sides and grill are worth the $500 too. If it runs as good as the seller says can't see parting it out. He claims this was his number one tractor he used all the time on his farm until he bought a new and bigger Massey Ferguson. He says it was running fine and just parked it about a year ago and had not touched it since.

I believe you are describing a Sherman Auxiliary. If so, it likely has three ranges; hi, lo and standard. This gives you 12 forward and 3 reverse speeds. Your PTO will speed up or slow down accordingly. That does not give it any advantage on operations such as roto tilling.

And,, one more thing I haven't seen covered. The main hydraulic relief valve is in the right front bottom corner of the center housing. Does the tractor without the hyd system have it? You'll need one if you want hydraulics

You say that it's stamped 820 above the serial number but it has a 5 speed transmission? The 820 had a 4 speed transmission and the serial number and model number are stamped into the transmission case, so I don't know how that could happen. I guess the transmission was replaced at some point and the shop that replaced it stamped the original numbers onto it even though it was a 5 speed.

To test whether it has live PTO or not, engage the PTO handle and slowly let the clutch out, if the PTO starts turning before the tractor starts moving then it has live PTO. If the PTO doesn't start turning until the tractor starts moving then it's non-live.

(quoted from post at 12:47:06 05/12/17) Got it home today. Suprise ... It's got the 5 speed tranny!!! So I guess it would have been a 850/860?

5 speed as in 5 forward speeds? Or five speed as in four forward and one reverse? If the latter, it's a four speed.

5 foreward speeds and 1 reverse.

It says on the tranny cover next to the shifter

4, 2 , 3

DN ---UP

5, 1, R

Five speed right?

Was trying to get it running today but was only able to install spark plugs and new point set.... Kept getting interrupted by visitors. Looks like rain coming all weekend so it's going to have to be put on pause till Monday
