Ford 600 trans case

Ford 600 is split. Looks like clutch springs wore out as eng and trans seals look ok. Have a port in trans case behind throw out bearing and on top to connect to gear shift part of trans case. That is filled with a heavy caulk of some sort. Any idea what that hole is and should it be plugged? My parts book shows that hole And it looks open to front and back of trans case...maybe like a breather port? Caulk sort of broke when I felt it and kind of less filled port right now. Thanks in advance!

Don't know, this hole is on the very top of the trans case. I can post a picture but I've tried before and it doesn't work. Can someone advise how to best post a picture in a forum message?

I don't think that I could get a plug in there right now. Picture of the exploded view in the part catalog shows this area with a hole which I thought was strange.

Hope I can add this picture...not sure if this caulk is in place of a welch plug?

Does anyone have a thought on why this caulk is inside what I'd call the bellhousing of the Ford 600 I'm working on with my son. Looks like a large glob of caulk was put in and when I touched it about 1/2 of it fell out. I assume a shift rod sits in that hole and maybe this was to prevent addl oil coming from the trans. I don't see any plug in my service manual or parts book (I have the good books). Anyone had a Ford apart with a similar observation?

thanks, MODAY

You don't say which transmission it has. The 600 was the series and there were different models within the series that had different transmissions. The most common models were the 640 which had a 4 speed transmission with non-live PTO, the 650 which had a 5 speed transmission with non-live PTO, and the 660 which had a 5 speed transmission with live PTO. But no matter which one it is, you are correct that the parts drawings do not show a plug at the front of any of the shift rails in any of the different transmissions that were available to the 600 series. The only rail that has a plug at the end at all is the rear end of the reverse rail in the 4 speed.

So if it wasn't supposed to have a plug there, my guess would be that the rail wore over the decades to the point that fluid was leaking around it, and rather than replace the rail a previous owner used that caulk. But being that high up it really shouldn't leak that much unless the transmission was overfilled at some point anyway, and possibly with too thin of a fluid.

If you pop the top cover on the tranny you will see the shifter rail that the hole is used for. I wouldn't worry about it
