Corn head grease in steering gear

working on a 861 restoration. Have seen several threads about using corn head grease in steering gear, mine has standard steering. If using corn head grease do you replace the pipe plug with a vented on like the one used with power steering or just put the pipe plug back in? thanks in advance

If it's not leaking why go to cornhead grease? Sometimes corn head grease will stay in longer than regular gear oil on a gearbox that has a slight leak, mayor leakers need to be rebuilt or you can get by for a while just pumping them full or regular axle grease,

I do not think a steering gearbox would ever generate the foam or pressure that a (say bushhog or hay rake gearbox might)

The old steering gearbox on my TO35 is full of gearoil and the fill plug is not vented,

Cornhead grease is a superior lube about the best most of us can buy,

Agreed.

No reason to change if not leaking badly.

A superior lubricant to CH grease for those leaking a bit is CNH Pourable High EP grease.

FWIW, the sector shaft seals can be changed without disassembly. That said, if the shafts or bushings are badly worn, replacement of the seals will not stop leaks.

If you decide to use the C.H. lube or an other type of grease, instead of reinstalling the pipe plug put a zerk fitting in place of the plug.

Sorry if this is too much too ask, but I also would like to try this but I have a 661 the little brother to the 861. Does someone have a picture of where to put the grease fitting, I don't have any problems yet, it's a little stiff and I'm going to rebuild it in the future, just going to buy some time. I do own a manual for this tractor but not real sure of the placement, how much to buy, and where it weeps out when it's full. Thanks in advance, CJ

Thanks all for the comments. Guess I got the wrong impression from the threads because one thread talked about rebuilding and putting in corn head grease in the case as he was reinstalling the sector shafts. That made me think it was preferred over the gear oil specified. So the consensus is use the ford spec unless severe leakage is encountered?
