Overhauling a Ford 4000 Diesel engine

Is it possible for a mechanic with minimal experience on vehicles to overhaul a tractor engine? Is there a book that gives step by step instructions, for a dummy? Thank you for your input.

From your earlier post (where they tell you
to always mention whether you have a 4
cylinder 4000 or a 3 cylinder 4000) it looks
like you have a 3 cylinder model.
Where are you located? I have a 3 cylinder
4000 torn apart here in Minneapolis and if
you were local would be happy to let you
watch/help me put it back together. Or go to
your place and help/oversee your overhaul.
If your mechanic has done overhauls on
automobile engines he should have no
problems with a tractor engine.
If he was just a parts changer on cars he
may not. Don't know his skill level.

Sure it's possible, an excellent learning experience. The appropriate
Ford Service manual will have disassembly/inspection/reassembly
instructions for all major engine components. You'll probably need to
buy or borrow some precision measuring equipment/specialized tools and farm out some tasks to a machine shop. The process, however, is not
for the unmotivated.

Pick up a I-T manual or Ford Service manual for your tractor, several on eBay for $20-50, get the correct manual for your tractor, 63-64 four cylinder models are completely different from 65-75 models.

I see your about 100 miles south of me.

That is awful nice of you to offer, but we are in Ky, and he is a parts changer. Can't remember whether it is a 3 or 4 cyl. will send a picture if I can. Maybe that will help?

Late 70 or newer, has integral power steering that was added after 8-70.

Looks like it's been setting for a while, is it locked up or what is the reason for needing overhauled.
