clutch repair

Got the old Ford 600 split and clutch material still on the disk. The previous owner was thinking it needed the clutch replaced. Lots of rust on the flywheel and pressure plate face. What is the normal next step...do you take the whole set-up to a clutch shop and they rebuild? Previous owner said it was slipping after driving away. I thought it would be more clear of a failure.

What else to replace while tractor is apart? I want to do it right while it's apart....throw out bearing, shaft seals.....looking for some advice on how to get it back together the best way. I know it will cost some bucks but want it done for another 20 years...

How do you best hold the engine from rotating when working on the clutch/flywheel too?

thanks, moday

I would buy a clutch kit which will have a new or rebuilt clutch disk and pressure plate throw out bearing and pilot bearing. Plus I would pull the flywheel and have it refaced at an auto parts store. Cost to have it refaced is around $20. As for it slipping sounds like the old owner had the clutch linkage way out of adjustment and if so the linkage caused the throw out bearing to not let the pressure plate do its job

If you're on a limited budget, I'd wire wheel or sand the friction surfaces of the flywheel and pressure plate and move on. A few pits are not going to hurt anything. Assuming nothing is warped, and the disc still has good lining left, as the other poster stated, the slippage was likely due to a mis-adjustment.

Thanks for all this great info. Found a clutch kit for like 180 bucks and 20 bucks to reface so may be back in business for 200....at least that part of the tractor. Next step is to clean, paint, make it pretty....Looks like radiator leaks a bit and there will be more parts to buy, like a battery box. I paid less than $400 for it so to get it running and looking good for $1K has me way ahead of the Ford 960 I did a few years ago.

Is there a trick to adjusting it? I will consult my manual but you guys are always great too!

thanks, Moday

See if I can add a picture....pressure plate looks ok and still friction on the disk (both sides). Doubt it's been ran in a few years.

No pictures LOL. Looks good does not mean it is good. All it takes is a bit of rust and a pressure plate will not work like it should and it is not fun to have to split a tractor a second time because things looked good but where not good. Or maybe the disk was in backwards which will also cause odd problems don't ask how I know that

Is there a trick to adjusting the clutch well yes and no. It depends on what model it is. But as per the manual is about as good as it gets. Why I say what model it is is due to the fact the single disk one is a bit different then the dual disk type that is the live PTO model I.E. 660

So what model is it?? 640 or 650 or 660 or??
