Water in crankcase Ford 555C backhoe

Had 5 gallons of water in crankcase. It was rainwater and it entered through a rusted out crack where the exhaust stack attached to the muffler. Root cause was the grommet where the exhaust goes through the hood deteriorated and fell off. There was also about a gallon and a half in the muffler.

Just informational about the source of the water getting in. letting people know that those grommets for the stack is important and what happens if the exhaust one is missing.

The grommet isn't the problem. The rotten muffler let the rain into the engine. A new grommet won't last if the exhaust isn't ALL directed up and out the stack.

The muffler has a jacket on it and the gap between the exhaust stack and the insulating metal jacket accumulates water if any runs down the outside of the stack and passes through the hood. The puddle that sits there rusts through the muffler right where the exhaust is welded to the inner shell of the muffler. The grommet sheds the water before it can get under the hood to form the puddle between the outer and inner shell of the muffler. I also caulked this spot with high temp caulk on new muffler.
