1710 alternator

I have a hitachi alternator on my 1710 that I think is bad, is there a comparable alternator that will fit. Went to autozone, and they said if I could
find a vehicle make that is the same they would test it. Thanks for any help.

So I am not getting a reading with my voltage meter out of the alternator itself, doesn't that indicate bad alternator?

Not necessarily. It probably needs a voltage or signal of some kind to start charging.

Does it have a charge indicator light? Does it glow when you turn the switch on. Does it go out after you start the engine?

It does have a charge indicator light, it stays on all the time, the back of the alternator has a plug that has a "T" shape to it with top spade labeled E and the left spade labeled F, and the right spade labeled N, and of course a terminal labeled B for your battery hookup. Sorry I don't know how to post pics.

You can buy a new alternator for around 100 bucks and a new regulator for about 25 bucks, why would you want to spend the time and effort to rig it up with something that doesn't fit?

Those letters indicate it is an externataly regulated alternator.

Do an internet search for Datsun 1200 alternator. That should turn up some wiring info, troubleshooting, and instructions to upgrade to internal regulated alternator. Compare that info to yours.

If it were mine, I would up grade it to an internal regulated alternator such as for a 1981 Datsun 510. Then everything is in one package and you won't have to try and determine if alternator or regulator problem, and your parts house can test it. About $50 plus core
