Rear main seal on Ford 860

I am starting to put my 172 engine back together out of my dad's ford 860. I have a question about the rear main seals. My shop manual shows the seal installed in the outer grove on the rear bearing cap. It also says to soak in oil before installation. The gasket kit also has a two part rubber seal that seems to fit in the outer grove. I have watched Edzgarage video rebuilding a 134 and he shows the seal that you soak in oil in the inner grove and the rubber seal in the outer grove. Any help would be appreciated.

No expert on rear main seals by any means. I will go on record saying you should use one or the other. If you elect to use both the outer one will not receive any lube and overheat. The soak in the oil seal will start to swell immediately and you want to be right quick on assembly. Do 1/2, set the crank and then do the other. I prefer the 2 pc rubber seal.

No way in ell would I use a seal that requires soaking in oil to make it expand. Get a Victor seal set that comes with a special RTV that replaces the paper side seals....

I will add I have use those seals that require to be soaked in oil instead of oil I soaked them in good RTV :D A good coat of RTV and install them....

Thanks to all for the input. makes sense about the outer one not receiving any lube. Looks like you need a special tool to set the one you soak in oil so I think I will use the rubber 2pc.

Read up on rear seals Myself I don't care for the rubber with a pin deal. I used it on my last build it leaked on the engine stand I went back and sealed it with RTV. Take note on how to check it before you install the pan. If you have to fight it in it will leak

You can't put a seal in the inner groove, because that is where the flinger disc on the flywheel runs. I used the two part neoprene seal on my last 172, and I am very happy with the results. The rope seals are tougher to put in and tougher to get right and easier to get a leak. Like Hobo I don't recommend the rubber seals that go between the bearing cap and the block. Use the Victor Reinze silicone instead. To get it all the way down apply some before putting the block in. Then add to it while the block is only one inch in, then keep adding to it as you ease the block down in.

(quoted from post at 02:36:16 05/01/17) One more dumb question which way does the lip on the neoprene seal go toward the inside of engine or toward the transmission. I have been
told both.

Lip to the oil engine side...
