1960 841 power steering

the power steering on my 841 does not work. I have not checked the pressure coming out of my pump yet but i know i have a problem in my steering valve. I have power steering fluid coming out of the vent of the steering gear box so the steering valve is leaking from some where. In my service manual there is an oring and seal on the steering shaft. Is this the problem or is it leaking from the actual steering valve? Also if it is the steering valve, can this be rebuilt? i have not found any rebuild kits online and an new one is pretty expensive.....? Thanks for the replies.

I'm doing this same job as we speak.
There is a seal below the control valve. Not the O-rings.
The seal in mine is junk and that allows the PS pump to
pressurize the gear box and pump the fluid out of the vent.
Part # 28 on the diagram from [b:c31ca39ecd]NH/Messicks[/b:c31ca39ecd].

Note that it says $8.05 but that's if you want it for a New Holland.
For a Ford, add a "F" to the end of the part number and it's $47.61.
I'll see if my local parts store can cross the number tomorrow.
I suspect they can since it looks to be a standard lip seal.

This is only the second one of these I've had to work on.
Many thanks to UltraDog MN for the guidance on both.

Thanks alot! seems odd to me that a lip seal would hold pressurized fluid but thats what it looks like. now the question is if this going to fix the no power steering or just fix the leak......? a new pump is not to cheap either but there are rebuild kits.

There is a pressure testing procedure in the I&T FO-20 manual.
I haven't studied the system enough to know if that procedure
would work when they leak as badly as mine does.
But my PS does sort-of-kind-of work and since it blows fluid
out of the vent pretty quickly I know it has "some" pressure.
One step at a time in my case. The tractor isn't earning my living.

First my question.Does anyone know if they made a 64 4000 Ford Hi-crop that its base tractor is an all purpose but it has 11x38 rear wheels and the extra long legs in the front and long lift arms in the back? Now my comment. I have been trying to figure out why I keep getting water condensation in the p/s fluid (it makes rust in the system and ruins your upper seal). I believe its because I didnt have the felt seal at the top of the column to keep condensation from being pulled in when the system cools down. Any comments on both?

Since you have to pull all the tin to get to the column and pull all the lines to the hydraulic block you might as well go through the hydraulic block while you are in there.
They can get rust and crud in there or you could have one or more broken springs in there.
It is not hard to do. Replace BOTH the upper and lower seals.
Marking the lines going to the steering cylinders before you remove them from the block will save hair pulling upon reassembly.

I forgot to add, if you rebuild your p/s box, make sure you check for broken springs in the control valve. Be careful removing that valve, parts will fall out the bottom.

A little follow up - the seal I took out of my steering box had an
I.P.C part number on it - 5683373. I took the seal to my parts store.
They crossed that to a Federal Mogul number for a PS Kit - PSK1
That kit contained two seals. One was a single lip seal the same
thickness and the other a dual lip seal that was just a tad thicker.
Either would have worked I think. I opted to install the dual lip.
Power steering is all back together and working, plus I have a
spare seal. $25 and no shipping. $12.50 each. I'll take it.
Now to see if they last as long as an original...
