8N front mount distributor odd wire

So I was wiring up an 8N today front mount distributor. Between that #3 and #4 plug wires and back just a bit is a wire coming out the side of the distributor is self. Looks like it was hooked up to the coil wire on top of the distributor. Not sure what the heck it is for or what it does. The guy did not have some of the correct stuff so will be going back tomorrow to finish it up but this wire has me wondering what the heck did some one do to this distributor to have a wire out the side of the distributor house. If it was a side mount I would understand but a front mount I'm not sure what the heck some one did.

Any body have any ideas?? Yes I will be pulling it tomorrow or i will most likely be.
Thanks

EI would be my guess Rich. I had one similar.
Have you had the cap off the front yet to look?

Can't find a picture at the moment, but pretty
sure it's still out there on the shelf if you need one.

All I have done so far is pop the coil off and when I did so that is when I found the odd out of place wire. Coil look like it is almost brand new. The guy who has it was hot wiring it to make it run and had no ballast resister hooked to the coil which i will be installing tomorrow unless one of you think there is no need for the ballast resister. Also instead of a gasket under the coil it had a piece of what looked to be inner tube cut to take the place of the gasket which I will also be gettign and putting on tomorrow

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

IIRC, and that is questionable, 12V EI was wired direct.
Coil still had the original ballast resistor on a front mount.
Even with a 12V coil.
I can't even speak to the 6V EI and the 12V is straight off
the top of my head at midnight, so double check it.
Pertronix is pretty good with their wiring diagrams.
Support too, for that matter.

No condenser under that coil?

As of right now all I have done was pull the coil off nothing more so could not see if the condenser was there but pretty sure it was since he did have it running or at least he said he did. Never dealt with an EI system on a Ford N series so not sure what I will find. All the old wiring has been cut off and has old wires sticking out here and there so all of that is being wired around and taken out and the Original ballast resister does not appear to even be there any more

if you can get pics it will help.

once you pull the dizzy off, ei will be evident if installed.

otherwise, see where that wire is hooked up. where it's hooked will tell us what it is.

as JM said. maybee for timing lamp...
