engine rebuild

I am rebuilding my fathers ford 860 172 engine. Just wondering what others recommend putting on all gaskets other than the head gasket if anything. Permatex maybe?

I do not recommend putting sealer on gaskets.

I glue them to one of the surfaces, then put sealers if there is a gap or mating surfaces.

Sealers get a bad name because people don't understand what
"a thin film on the gasket" means. It doesn't mean a 1/8 inch
bead that squishes out the sides when you tighten the bolts down.

Used correctly, they can help with an irregular surface.
I do not use them in hydraulic systems and you've already ruled
out head gaskets. Head bolts/studs excluded.

But they do work well to help seal water pumps, timing chain
covers, oil pans, etc. Permatex Ultra Gray for high vibration
parts. Pay attention to the directions for it as they are different.

I do not like using it, because I think it reduces the friction that keeps the gasket in the proper place when clamping down.

"I think it reduces the friction that keeps the gasket in the proper place when clamping down."

Especially true with "rubber" gaskets, like transmission oil pan
gaskets in the late '60's cars. I would not use anything on those.

I say "rubber" because I can't remember what they were actually
made out of, but they normally got pitched here and replaced
with a simple cork gasket. There wasn't any real pressure there.
Yet the rubber ones always seemed to leak.

I usually stick the gaskets down on one side with Indian Head sealer, let that set up, then finish up.

I do think a lot of people over tighten cork gasket.
