Ford 901 Fluids

I found 2 drains and 3 fill points on the 901, I drained out about 4 gallons of dark hydraulic fluid.

How and where should I go about refilling it?

Is there a sump screen?

What would capacity be?

I'm assuming you're talking about other than engine here. There should be three drains; transmission, hydraulic reservoir and rear axle.

Each of the fill plugs corresponds with one of the drains. Capacities for your transmission vary depending on which transmission you have.

Without the books in front of me the only capacity I can tell you is for the SOS transmission and since you've identified three fill locations, I doubt you have that option.

And once I think about it, since it's a 901, there should be fill plugs on each of the drop housings on the axles for a total of five.

It is a five speed 961.

Did I miss another drain plug?

I did see the two on the bull gears for axles.

think about it.. it's a seperate compartment machine. you can't have 2 drains and 3 fills. ;)

If you want to get technical, it's 5/5 or 7/7 if you count steering. ;)

Taking a 4000 for an example,

Tranny full plug on right side near left brake pedal; fill on top of tranny
Hyd full may be a dipstick, like my 2000 on the left side of the hyd mid section with the fill on top of it-the section under the seat
Diff fill and full combo plug on the left rear (of the axle housing) and full is when it runs out the ?" pipe plug hole on the side

Fluids were 90-134-90. On my 2000 the last time I drained I went with 134-134-90. Reason I did this is that on my 2000 the hyd in/out tubes run through the bottom of the tranny gear case and have developed a pin hole or two which pumps hyd fluid into the tranny anyway.....I drain it every so often and refill the hyd sump....no biggie. Not worth a tear down for a minor annoyance.....thanks to Sound Guy for telling me what I had wrong several years ago.

Tranny shifts much easier in the winter and picked up a few more leaks. Slight gear whine increase. Will leave it.
