New here and have two questions. I just got a Ford 601 and it has a leak on the bottom of the transmission there is a inspection hole cover and in the center of the cover is a hole. It is not threaded so what goes on that hole and where can i get it?
Next question what oil for the engine (30wt, 10w30 40wt, 10w40)?

do you not see a cotter key dangling from the hole, your rear main has probably sprung a leak, I run 15w40 oil in my 601 and other gas burners

If leaking from the hole with the cotter pin it with either be engine oil, rear main seal or tranny fuild, input shaft seal. If you dab a little on your figure you
should be able to smell the difference. Post a photo if not correct location.

As the others have said, that hole is to allow any fluids that leak into the bell housing area of the transmission to be able to have an escape route. The bell housing area is normally dry with no fluids, and any fluids that get in there can potentially contaminate the clutch. The fluid that is leaking could be from a leak in the rear of the engine or in the front of the transmission. There should be a cotter pin installed loosely in the hole that should move from the vibrations of the tractor when it is running and driving and that cotter pin moving around in the hole is supposed to keep the hole clear of dried mud or other things that might clog it up.

As to which oil to use in the engine, most folks on here use a C rated 15W40.

As the others have said that oil is suppose to leak there.

As for engine oil it depends a lot on where your at. Here in Missouri at the lake of the Ozarks I run 20W-50 oil in every thing I own cars trucks and tractors. But if you up north a 10W-40 or 5W-30 maybe needed
