Dearborn sickle mower on 981

Can I mount a Dearborn sickle mower to my 981? I found a decent one but I wo ant to make sure that I can actually use it.

Thanks for your knowledge.

Depends on model and in some cases such as the 501, what brackets are with it, as they will be different for N vs hundreds.

It's a 7 footer and the guy says it has "dog bones" to mount it o a 8n/9n. Does that help to narrow the model down any? If it does, what brackets do I change and are they available?

ot for me, as there were many Dearborn sickle bar mower models. The 501 was actually a Ford instead of Dearborn. I expect the those Dearborns are too old to fit that tractor, but with modifications, might be made to work. Probably need to do a trial fit or find someone who has.

P.S. the last model Dearborn that I know of was sold without the mounting kit, as different mounting kits were used for the N or hundred series applications & sold separately.

(quoted from post at 17:27:00 04/13/17) From pictures, it looks like is a 14-59 or 14-73.
hose would work with correct mounting kit, but...the guy said he had dog bones for 8N, thus indicating to me that it was on an 8N. While dog bones may be same either tractor, it will be lower mounting parts that differ.

I would hold out for a Ford 501 or something
newer.
There are a couple of different brackets you
would need - beside the dogbones - to mount
the thing on your tractor. And from what
I've read they took a lot of time to mount.
I had one and never did get all the parts
together to get it working and sold it.
Bought a 501 and it mounted easily and
quickly without all the extra brackets and
rigamarole.

It would take a awful lot of work to adapt the two mowers you described, to fit on a row crop (981) tractor) tractor. besides, Dearborn never made a decent mower in my opinion, Now a 501 Ford mower as a different story. It is a good mower and will fit on any Three point Ford. if it is all there.

OPs, I wasn't paying attention (row crop). Listen to Wayne.

My 2 cents would also be to hold out for a 501. Sounds like this is an early mower and the dog
bones are the least of your worries to mount it on a rowcrop. Even on a 8N you needed a special
center bracket for the middle link because it wouldn't reach the normal holes in the rocker plus
the special bracket under the right fender for the cutter bar trip. The tractor is also too tall.
Granted, a torch & welder could make it work but with a lot of work. Sorry Greg NE

I think you are making a wise decision to pass on it. Kind of like the differences for the sickle bar mower on the farmall cub and the cub loboy most of the
parts/brackets are different. It would be a lot of fabrication to get it to sit level and mow right.

I have the special center bracket on my 881 if anybody needs one. it was on the tractor when I bought it but I didn't buy the mower.

Unless your just wanting a Ford mower for your collection get a New Holland 451, they're one of the best sickle bar mowers made.
