4400 5th gear mystery

looking at a 1970 4400 to buy. Everything is perfect even the lights work. no leaks, again perfect. The only 2 things i have a question on is in fifth gear or 1st position in high (as the farmer describes) the gear does not engage at regular position. the shifter handle rotates to the left 90 degrees and then it engages 5th gear. What could that be? and is it a deal killer. also only other thing that maybe a redflag is the pto is independent and keeps running after lever is turned off until you hit clutch. Is that normal operation?

Gear shift lever is worn out and so is pin in cover. I just went thru same thing on my 4500TLB. had new pins made and built up slots on levers. Not all 8 speed trans are indepent pto depends on location of shifter.

The clutch should have NO impact on the pto, if it has independent pto. The fact that it keeps spinning is likely due to a worn pto brake - they are not exactly robust. The pto on my 4600 spins until the oil warms up some.
The shifter rotating like that is probably from a small pin (I believe it's called a locator pin in the parts diagram) that can sometimes work loose and fall out. Not expensive or a big deal to replace, except on the rowcrop models with the shifting levers coming through the platform.

That should fix it. But check the pin first. I had a
5000 like that...all it needed was the pin.... much
cheaper.

The shifter has a pin in it, on the ball, where it mounts in the shifter top cover.

I have seen the pin worn completely off and smooth so that you almost could not see that it was ever there. This pin is critical to keep the shifter from spinning sideways. The pin is no more than a rivet, used to keep a sickle blade on a sickle bar, but does a very important job... also check the shift cover as the notch or groove that the pin goes in, can also be worn... And usually when its that worn, the lower end of the shifter is also worn off quite a bit. This can cause further problems with locking in gear as its too short to properly pull one shift fork back to neutral before engaging the other fork...

You can replace the missing rivet easily.. but you can also get an replacement shift cover complete with levers, if its an 8 speed, aftermarket, for cheaper than a shift lever.

I see this in mainly loader tractors that were shifted in forward/reverse yard work over and over.
