I purchased a new power steering control valve for my 1963 Ford 4000 Industrial. Still trying to get power steering working from my last post I have made with no luck. Still power one way and hard to steer the other. Steers fine if I disconnect cylinders in both directions. This new power steering control valve looks identical to the original one until I took it apart. There are no special plungers or 1/4 balls. All holes have 2 plungers and a spring in the middle. Wonder if this is a upgrade or did I get a bad part. Also when I put this on the tractor do I tighten nut till washer is flat then back off 1/6 turn? Manual says till all endplay is gone. I am attaching a pic of new valve.[/img]

A control valve with plungers and springs in all the bores is the current configuration.

Rick B is correct on the plungers. I do not
know how the change would affect the
function of the valve but assume the
manufacturer knows what they're doing.
CNH is no longer selling the special
plungers either.
Read my last reply to you on tightening the
nut against the spring.

Thanks to both for replying. I thought the same thing but wanted to get a second opinion. Still don't know what is meant by end play

Consider a conventional ball point pen. With the writing tip retracted, the plunger on the end is under spring tension. If you shake the pen, the plunger will not rattle because of the spring tension. Now click it once to extend the writing tip, and see what happens to the plunger. With most pens, the plunger rattles back and forth like a baby rattle. The amount the plunger moves back and forth is end play.

Ok now I think I get it. If push center spool down till hits bottom bearing race then tighten top race to spool the races are tight agains the spool with no play. Then off 1/6 turn. This is now making sense. The springs and the plungers keep the bearings tight between the 2 races. My bearings on top and bottom were both messed up and falling out because previous owner had it too loose. I was trying to put it back to where it was by counting threads on top. I'll give you a update when I get it. Ack together in a day or 2
Thanx a million
