Diesel Fuel Tank Gunk

I brought the fuel tank for the 961D back to town so that I could work on the component swap in the comfort of my shop. I can't believe what was in that tank. All of the brass components have a sticky green slime on them. The inside of the tank and the cap had a thick brown scale that looks like rust, but after scraping it, is definitely not rust. The bottom of the tank has about a half inch of gooey, sticky brown sludge in it. And the sending unit had a hard crystalline substance formed on it. Also, the surface of the plastic components of the sending unit were soft and mushy, as was the O ring at the fuel shut-off.

What the heck was in this fuel?

The fuel cap and the sending unit (see photos) were installed new in the winter of 2014.

I was able to do a close examination of this tank with it off the tractor. I think it is salvageable if I can get it cleaned out. Carb cleaner seemed to clean the parts pretty good, so maybe a long soak in a carb cleaner bath.

Most of the fuel out of the tank was nice and clean looking. This is what the last gallon or so looked like.

Crazy! Algae! Is this something that requires occasional maintenance attention or can be prevented by using an additive?

There's at least one company that makes an algicide (sp?) for fuel. Same company as makes the winter anti-gel that I use, but do you think I can think of the name??

That's why I use Power Service year round. I just put it in my storage tank when I fill it, and always use enough for winter temps. I have been using it for 25+ years and I never have fuel problems.

Wonderful modern diesel fuel. It corrodes the dry areas of a fuel tank and breeds algae. Bio kleen is a product that will eliminate the algae. As for the corrosion try to keep your tank full as much as possible. I usually see this more on equipment that doesn't get used regularly.

buy a premium grade #2 diesel, it has the additives in it to control it. Most convienence store and truck stop diesel is not premium diesel.
