6610 shifting. Column shift

Friend of mine has the column shift on his 6610. 1st & 2nd, 5th & 6th work fine. 3rd 4th,
7th & 8th jump out of gear and you have slam it hard into those gears to get it to go into
gear. Under load, it stays in those gears fairly well but going down hill it will jump into
neutral. He said it started a couple years ago and is gradually getting worse. We pulled
the top cover and everything looked good but, what a job trying to get everything lined up
to it the cover back on. I have worked on Fords from 9n to the early Genesis and have never
seen such a poor shifting system as this 6610. Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem
might be? Thanks for your help. Also need a right fender. Seems that tornados are
rather hard on fenders.

I don't have an answer for your immediate concern, but I do agree with you that this particular style of shifting arrangement is quite the abortion. I do know that Ford came out with a kit for the early models to convert the shifting pattern from the pre-H pattern design to a true H pattern. Whether or not this conversion would help is doubtful. If it worked fine before, but now it slips out, something is worn inside, whether it's the shift collars and/or the shift linkage.

The linkage and the forks look to be in real nice condition. This was one of those, I need it now, put it back together and I'll use it that way things. Didn't get a chance to see if it is a synchro trans. If a synchro is bad could that cause this? Thanks
