Bent pushrod '57 641

Went to start the tractor this afternoon, and something sounded funny as soon as I started cranking...

I don't know why, but I thought about the pushrods, and yep they were bent. two of them were...

Anyway looking for replacements new/used and I see there is a 1/4" version and a 5/16" version. Mine measure 0.128" so I assume they are the 1/4" version. In looking around it looks like I need a different adjuster to use the 5/16 version

what years/models should I be looking for for:
1. The original 1/4" versions
2. The newer (I assume) 5/16" version with the different adjuster.

It looks like the 5/16 are available new, but not the 1/4" ones, but the adjuster is available new, but is $25 each

Trying to figure out the best path forward so I can get back to work...

Funny, as it ran fine last week...

Also, it appears that I will have to remove the tank / sheetmetal to get them out - is this correct? - any tricks for fishing them out?

Thanks in advance!
Rick

Can't help you with if they can be removed without removing the tin and tank or not. But I have a 134 with a hole in the block. I'll check which size pushrods it has. If they're the right ones, I guarantee I could sell you a couple for less than $25 a piece. Email is open.

What, where, how are you measuring?
I have some used ones out of a 134 that I would
measure and see if they match up for you.

It is the #1 and #4 intake valves.

It was a rough measurement based upon a caliper I could not get quite square - I figured it was good enough to see if they were 1/4 or 5/16.

They are just a few thou over 1/4"

The pushrods I have measure .273 outer diameter.
They have not been cleaned and have some carbon on them.
If that matches send me an email.

The ones Royce has should be a match for you.
Before you put them in and try starting it, better find out why they bent. Stuck valves?

Hood and fuel tank off. Bent pushrods will straighten. BTDT Kinked, especially near the top end, need to be replaced

"Bent pushrods will straighten."

Indeed. BTDT too. How long they will stay straight depends.
As FF said, I'd want to find out why they bent to start with.

don't bother trying to straighten them, unless you like practice removing the hood and tank. bent, straightened ones are just looking to bend, flex and jump off again.

Also.. if they bent.. they bent for a reason..make sure your valves are not stuck. I've been thru 2 172ci engines with bent push rods.

if they are bent like spaghetti, you can nip them and take them out in pieces.

In my hand written notes I see that the early 2 piece adjusters used 9 3/4" rods with a .273 diameter and button style ends. next are rods for a 1 piece adjuster, also .273 diameter, also button ends, but only 9 5/8", then there are the .312 later rods. ( later.. like 63/64 000 series ).

You will want a new cover gasket at a minimum.

the complete head set is HS 7761 B-2 ( felpro at napa )

Thanks to all, got a set coming from ebay, and a set with rockers coming from ebay.

Hopefully they will work in this application.

Thanks for the heads up on the length differences; and other information!
