New Fuel Tank

Even after cleaning out the old fuel tank on my 961D, there was so much crud and loose pieces of rust that I've gone through 3 fuel filters over the course of 18 hours of operation. Those filters would have made a nice down payment on a replacement tank.

I bit the bullet last week and ordered a replacement tank from this site. I did a test fit this afternoon. Looks perfect. Even has a tap for the diesel fuel return, though the fuel return tap is towards the back of the tank by the sending unit as opposed to the OE tank which has it closer to the radiator. A little extra steel fuel line. The new tank capacity is also smaller than the OE tank, which was about 18 gallons.

Colin, just curious if you tried siphoning. When I got my 971D it had a lot of crud in the tank. I siphoned the fuel out along with most of the cud and have had no more problems in some fifteen years.

I've drained it twice and siphoned it once. I've never seen anything like it before, though this is by far the most time I've spent with a diesel tank. The tank is a thick layer of rusted, flaking, and corroded metal. The tank side of a new fuel cap I purchased two years ago looks like it's 40 years old it's so rusty. Is this normal for diesel to be so corrosive?

I would look at diesel as a preservative. Have you kept the tank full?

An old truckers trick. If you suspect that there is water in the tank, take a length of cotton rope and put it in the tank over nite. The next morning pull it and the frozen water out.
