8N starter install

I've just purchased a new starter from our Host. I removed the old one with out incident, 1950 8N side mount.

The new one is being hard to install, I mistakenly rotated the Bendix so it is extended. Is there a reason that this needs to be retracted to reinstall? If so how does one do that?

Thanks for your help.

You have to spin it full speed to get it to retract. No reason it can't be installed that way. It should retract the first time you spin it over. Also, there is a board here specifically for the N tractors, help is plentiful there and usually pretty quick responses too.

Going to the N Board is a good idea. Notwithstanding, I believe that those N owners, like me, will tell you to relieve (grind out) a portion of the bell housing starter hole at approximately the 1-2 o'clock position. Not too much ! That will help installation of the starter.
