I have a '62 Ford with a 713 BH and the crowd cylinder is shot and from
research it seems that the 723 has upgraded particulars that may be a much
better solutions for me in the long and short run. If so I would be
interested in a complete or near complete BH attachment for my '62 tractor!
Any help from the gurus is always appreciated. Thanks

Jim:

I received your email via ytmag but thought I would reply here. I replaced my 713 crowd cylinder years ago with a modern generic and transplanted the old ends. Below is a picture. According to the 713 & 723 Parts Book the part number for the original 713 crowd cylinder is 193090 but it says to service with 198411 which I think is probably the one used on the 723 (assuming your backhoe is 12ft. Like mine). I lost my original crowd cylinder to a scrap metal thief years ago so no longer have any parts. Believe it or not the perp went to jail for that but I digress. There is a 713 for sale on Ebay right now but, unfortunately for you, it's in CA. It also looks pretty rough. Tony Jacobs may be able to help you but he hasn't posted on YT for quite a while. If you need info from the 713 & 723 parts Book let me know.

Andy thanks for the reply... The PIC looks as though it is the same top pin mounting as mine (1 1/2") and the bottom concealed one is a 1 1/2" block type mount ... I am inquiring about the differences because it seem that the upgraded 723 cylinder has an upgraded adjustable gland nut (where the big problem is with mine is the cap is stripped out and the tube as well) which i thought would be a better fix !! Tell me please , as i look at yours it seems exactly what I need for a replacement.... where did you purchase yours and did you have to modify anything at all to make it fit , and lastly what was the cost ?? It looks like an excellent fix for yours and mine as well ?? I can send pics of mine but I would have to cell phone them, otherwise if you have the source I can ID via there pics perhaps ??

Andy after reading again I see where you "transplanted" the old ends" That is regarded in my last reply ...more understandable now ! Is the top (where you show the hoses) pin connection --- did you remove (cut) it from the old cylinder and then rewelded as well as the bottom Block type pin connector from the old cylinder as well ? If so, was wondering if it was a difficult project weld ?

Andy don't know if mine is 12' or higher (how can I ID this? What I do know is that from center pin hole to center pin hole is 4' and 1 1/2 " diameters for each pin size. The tube Inside Diameter is 3 1/2" and rod size is 2" in diameter.

The cylinder I used is a Prince PMC-5636. It is a 4" X 36" with 2" rod as opposed to 3 1/2" X 36 1/2" with 2" rod for the original. At the time I had to move up to 4" because most 3 1/2" X 36" cylinders had a 1.5" or 1.75" rod. Swapping the ends was a basic "cut and paste" as I recall. I did welding with stick and it wasn't too difficult because it's pretty heavy metal. The current cost of such a cylinder at a place like Northern Hydraulics or Surplus center is around $500 and the shipping cost is probably pretty hefty as well.

The 12 Ft. Refers to maximum digging depth. The 713 came in three sizes, 10, 12, and 14 ft. The easiest way to tell is from the model number on the data tag. 19-153 is 10, 19-154 is 12, and 19-155 is 14.

Jim, if you are anywhere near the Albany, NY area, take that cylinder to Mooradian Hydraulics in Nassau. They can work miracles.

Hello Andy , I am still here just don't have the time to post as often as I used to . Still building Fords , 4x4 's , Industrials same as before , still have quite a few parts . I spoke with Jim today while I was on the road and have check to see if I have a good cylinder for him . Thanks Tony

Hey Tony, good to hear from you. Don't see many 713s around anymore -
I think most made the big trip to China! I'm still carrying the flag
- below is from the Historical Construction Equipment Association 2016
Convention. I think I could have used an Elenco that day! Even I'm
cracking though, just bought a 1994 Ford 455D, needed some more grunt.
Take care.
