So I'm moving slowly through my engine rebuild process. I've decided that I want to do as much as I reasonably can to keep the little diesel. I was going along pretty smoothly, until I noticed how badly damaged the rear thrust face of the center main bearing was.
The crank thrust face that rides against it is gouged out deep, far beyond spec. My machinist said it would need to be welded and ground, if I couldn't find bearings with oversized thrust faces. He said that type of bearing was readily available for common engines, but has anybody ever found one for this one?
He also said that that kind of damage probably indicated clutch trouble, either misuse or incorrect parts or improper assembly etc. My engine was run out of oil by the PO, that's what sunk it. Could that much damage have been done by just using the clutch, when oil was extremely low? The thrust face is much more badly damaged than any other bearing surfaces. What should I look for in the clutch assembly that might've caused this?
Thanks, Alex
