Got it home this evening and got in there and disconnected the loader pump from the front of the crank.
Put a bar on the ring gear and it won't move.
I'd say the engine seized up.
I talked to the seller's brother - he lives where the tractor was - and he heard it quit from inside the house. He said it sat there idling for about 20 minutes then sounded like it started laboring like it was running out of fuel. Then it just quit.
Odd that it would sit at idle and seize up. But stranger things have happened I guess.
It always seems kinda cruel to knock one over the head but this point it's a parts tractor.
Thanks to all for the help deciphering things on this.

That's a shame Jerry. Was the oil what it should have been?
At least you can honestly say it ran when parked. ;)

20 minutes might be how long it ran at idle without any oil pressure. Makes me wonder if something happened to the pump drive. Nah, that would be very rare for a 3-cylinder.

I wonder if it got parked because it started making some "funny noises".

Let us know what you find if you ever end up doing an autopsy on that engine.

You might want to check it out before you write it off. Maybe it overheated. I remember a 3 cyl that seized when vandals started it and cut the top coolant hose. It was seized the next morning and the insurance company paid for a new engine, but when it got to the shop days later, it was no longer seized.

I know Bern said the injection pump shaft would shear but now you know it was idling when it quit. Who knows how fast it was turning when it seized. Might not hurt to check the pump just to prove Bern right.

I had TO-20 do the same thing. left it idling; had to run in the house to care of business and when I came out it was sized up. upside is I was NOT sized up. :)

Even though it's a pain to drop the pan on those, I'd sure do it before calling it a parts tractor, those tractors are monsters
