Ford 600 tractor

The Ford hundred series always look so different than a car starter when you pull it forward out of the bell housing....

There is some kind of clutch/spring on the end that seems to have pulled out on my starter and doesn't want to engage and go back into place. It was not like that when the starter came out, but my son kind of wound it out. Is there trick to that going back in? I thought about adding battery voltage but maybe I'm missing something simple. It seems like last time I did one of these, it would come out and in rather easy.

thanks in advance, MODAY

I'm not 100% sure but I think that starter has a centrifugal release on the bendix. So it needs to be spun up to speed in order to release. You could try putting the body of the starter in a bench vise so it doesn't go anywhere and then connect a pair of jumper cables to the battery and touch the starter with them to spin it up. One side of the jumper cables to the body of the starter and the other cable to the large post.

I think YouTube had an idea. Involved a handheld grinder and wire wheel. Had to spin it fast enough to go back in. Ruined an easy swap lol. Google had several ideas.

Try putting the starter in so the the bendix is tilting slightly down and to the right. This, if you have done it will clear the ring gear which is what you have to clear. At the same time after it's in place and against the engine body,( make sure the engine block and the front end of the starter are squeaky clean andscrew in the two long bolts that hold the comlete body of the the generator together . If you don't catch at least one of the bolts you could have the starter fall apart in your hands. Get a copy of Bruce's 75 tips, they are excellent.
