starter bendix drive replacement

A friend of mine has a 1971 ford 3000 gas that stopped running last week while snow ploughing. I got it running again after replacing the points that were burnt. I will check and make sure if the coil needs a resistor or not. My friend is let's say a patcher and god only knows what is in there. My question is this the starter Bendix will not engage and I think it needs to be replaced. Never done this before and wondering if this is a hard job. While I am working on the starter I was also thinking of replacing the starter solenoid. Just wondering if there is any suggestion. Thank you all.

for the cost.. I think I'd just take the starter to a rebuilder and have it rebuilt ( not replaced ). it probably needs brushes by now if other parts are wearing out.

On your coil / resistor question.

that 3000 gasser shipped with a 6v coil, and a ball of resistor wire burried in the wiring harness ( and an ignition bypass relay ).

the 6v coil needs the resistor wire.

I'm pretty sure that the bypass was just a wire from the solenoid to the coil, not a relay, and all it did was connect the output of the "Start" position of the key switch directly to the coil while the "Run" position went through the resistor wire to get to the coil.
