Does anyone know where I can find a owners manual the list parts for the Sherman 54C100 Power Digger Back Hoe.
The back hoe moves very slow and has a lot of chatter when it moves. Is this a bad hydraulic pump or cylinder leak by?
I know I have a couple cylinders leaking down when I shut down the tractor and would like to replace the seals. Where would be a good place to start on buying the seals for the cylinders.

I have found over the years in the long run its cheaper to take them to a hyds shop and have them done then to do it my self. Any good shop will have what is needed on hand and if they mess up they bite the bullet and its easy to mess up a seal when you try to put one back together. BTDT and learned the hard way and it cost me $$$. Last one I had done cost me $25 total to do and if I had gotten the seals it would have cost me almost as much and I would have had to do the work

I've had the exact 180 degree opposite experiece as old. Last cylinder I had done on an old ford hoe cost me over $350 bucks. All they did was repack with new Vee's, seal and wear ring.

The next 5 (FIVE - yes FIVE) cylinders I did myself and the bill was less than $250 TOTAL.

The old cylinders are easy to do. You will need a special tool to undo the ends. Called an adjustable spanner wrench. Ebay has them or local tool store. Loosen the cylinders while on the machine. Much easer to torque them loose. You may need to put a long pipe on the spanner. Slide out the rod. Undo the nut (you have an air impact wrench, right?). Remove and replace the seals etc, put it back together and done. After a few you can do one in under an hour. If you use a piston ring compressor, it really helps get the vee's in the cylinder easily and undamaged.

If you get into the larger cylinders and can't get them apart, the shop may be your last resort.

H&D Distributors in texas is a good place to get parts. They have a real good download catalog with pictures of all the parts. 10 meg. It was worth getting and I DL'ed with dial up.

If you want more places let me know and I'll dig into my links.

Tex, Hello, Mine is older, but it hsd rope packing on the pistons on the inside end of the ram and i had to convert it to modern packing. To restore the backhoe it cost me $1100.00 to have 5 cilinders recromed and $450.00 for pins and bushings,And all new packing and seals. It costs about as much as a new generic cylinder to recrome and repack the old one. The old ones are a lot better steel and quality.-ed

John,
Thanks for the info. I use to rebuild hydraulic cylinders in a shop but it"s been 30 years ago. How do I make sure I order the right parts? The cylinders are 3" with a 1 1/2" ram. I looked at the site you posted but didnt have a clue what I was looking for.

The only way I've found is to take them apart and measure. Use the pictures to get the same seals. If they have the ancient rope style, well it's time to figure out how to upgrade!
