More 640 wire issues.

Put new wires on from solenoid to
starter. Also new battery wires.
Last time I was out there (2-3
days ago) I didn't take negative
battery cable off ,so battery
dead. Why does it do that? 960 no
issues with battery drain ,I
always leave cables hooked on it.
But on 640 if you leave em on it
dies over night. Key is off.
Hanging in kitchen. Lol

Charged it up some. Spun over good.... After I tapped starter with a small hammer. It clicks until it gets tapped.

so - it's a 12v conversion, right? - - an alternator I presume? - -

I'd suspect an issue with the wiring, the regulator, or the/a diode associated with the alternator conversion -

on a three wire set-up, the 1 and 2 terminals are sometimes wired backwards - only terminal #1 should have power with the switch on - (and always a good idea to check the general condition of the plug and connectors for deterioration...)

if it's a one wire set up there could be an issue with a leaking diode in the rectifier bridge (within the alternator itself) -

if there is an external regulator associated with the conversion, that would be a good place to look for malfunction -

if you have a multimeter you can measure the draw and disconnect wires until you isolate the fault -

"It clicks until it gets tapped."

Did it do this before you changed the cables?
If not, maybe you have a loose/dirty connection.
Or the battery is not fully charged.

I would second the drain possibly being the alternator.
Easy enough to check with a test lamp.
Hook the lamp in series with the wire and see if it lights.
Key off, just as it is when the battery gets drained.

Got issues with alternator wires. One (of 2) coming off plug has melted at some point. So alt ain't charging didn't think it would drain battery when it was off. I can get a single wire alt from Napa for less than 50 bucks. Maybe be way to go?

Yep. It was clicking and needing a
tap. So changed solenoid and
battery wires. And wire to
starter. Been running fine ,no
starting issues. Alt never has
charged. Just charge battery every
week or so.

Most one wire alternators need high RPM as in 1800-200 to excite which is hard on a tractor engine. The simple 3 wire starts charging at less then 1000 RPM and a place like O'Reilly's sell them for around $45 with a life time warranty

I will see about getting one tomorrow. Read somewhere in archives that maybe needing to tap starter could be a dirty connection between starter and frame? Replaced Bendix couple months back. Starter seemed slow after that.

So......On my 960 if I'm just puttering around the yard it seems like alt ain't charging. Are you saying that unless it hits a certain rpm it won't start charging? If we use it hard battery stays charged good .It has a single wire alt. So much to learn. Lol. I sure am glad y'all are willing to help. Thanks.

What can we do to keep wires clean? Seems like they have issues every few months. We use wire brush and fine sandpaper.

Use dielectric grease on all connections and that will keep things working as they should

I use grease on all of those type of connections, cuts corrosion by reducing air/water contact.

Ps,

A starter that works when tapped could be getting worn brushes

I've read on here that folks rebuild starters. How difficult is that? I'm a darn good carpenter but between the wife and me we do OK with mechanical stuff! Lol

If you have the tools, starter rehab isn't bad.

Dressing comutator can be dine with abrasive cloth unless it is really gone.

Etc.

On the other hand, 80$ ususlly gets a dressed com, new brushes, bushings or bearings, and a coat of cheap paint that usually doesn't match your tractor, and sometimes insulates the the union point of the starter to the tractor where you want a good ground. ;)
