Ford 660 Hydraulics

Is there a trick to getting the cover off the Hydraulic chamber of a 1955 Ford 660. Have all the bolts out but the rest of the cover does not want to come up. I'm a rookie, so any help would be appreciated.[/quote]

Under the front of the seat is either a
hydraulic valve or a cover plate.
Did you remove that and the bolt
underneath it? If it is out
It usually takes a pretty good pry bar to
break the gasket loose.

I did not take that plate off, but took a couple of through bolts out. I'll pull the plate and look for a bolt underneath. Thanks

he two through bolts at right front corner do need to come out, but unlike you have been told, there is no "under the cover" bolt that needs to be removed. That bolt holds cylinder assy to top cover.

Yes, I was able to take the lid off once the bolt under the valve plate was taken out. The piston housing dropped down, but was able to get it out as one unit. I appreciate all the help. My hydraulics were stuck in the up position (tractor sat for 20 years unused) and I am trying to get it going. Engine is running, now hydraulics need work. Once I took the lid off, I could see the main valve linkage was separated from the valve end as the end was worn. I think this is the problem as the main valve was stuck open but was able to get it loose. Hope this gets it working. Thanks again for the input.

I checked with Kenny today.
He said you are correct - no bolt under the
blockoff cover. My bad.
The 3 cyl tractors do have a bolt under
there.

Well, perhaps just wording, but I say, yes there is a bolt there, but it is one of four attaching cylinder/valve body to the top cover, not attaching top cover to tractor body/housing. Now, for this fellow, he did need to remove that bolt because his arms were stuck in up position & thus the rocker so far rearward that he couldn't lift cover off. So by removing bolts attaching cylinder to cover, such that cylinder falls away from cover, he then had enough clearance to remove cover, sans cylinder. So mentioning that bolt to him got him the end result that he needed. Sometimes things work out for whatever reason.

i was able to get the system working today. The main valve was stuck and the linkage had pulled out from the end of the valve. Cleaned the parts and put it back together, and it works. Still needs a fluid change, which I plan to do tomorrow if I can find a 4864A equivalent. Any suggestions for getting the old fluids out of the lines and pump, or should I just drain and add new fluids? Thanks again everyone!
