Parts Quality, New Aftermarket vs. Used OEM

Have some concerns about the quality of aftermarket parts, vs some used OEM stuff, primarily cams and lifters. I'm rebuilding a 201 gas engine, I have a used cam that looks to be in good shape. New aftermarket cams and lifters aren't terribly expensive, but I'm not familiar with the different suppliers or quality. You seem to hear about a lot of problems in the car world with new cams/lifters failing, even with proper break-in procedure. Imported or poor quality parts are often suspected as a cause. I know the usual response is to just replace everything, but sometimes putting in new aftermarket parts is more of a gamble than used stuff. Appreciate any opinions.

I rebuilt the 201 (diesel - cylinder wall cavitation) in my 4600 a few years ago.It was around 8500 hours at the time. Never
thought twice about putting the old cam and lifters back in...but that tractor has been here since new, and we know it has had good
maintenance. I would lean towards reusing the cam, as long as it looks good, even if you don't know the tractor's whole history.
Know anyone with a dial indicator set up to measure and compare cam lobes? As long as the lobes and cam journals check out, I don't
see a reason not to use it...

I always take a close look at the lifters. If two of them butted up end to end rock, that's a good sign, as new lifters are ground with a convex shape on the end. If they don't rock, you likely have a flat cam also, meaning the taper on the lobe is most likely gone.

I've replaced the cam and lifters in two of my 201 engines and one in a 256.
The engine kits and cams came from Tisco, I've had good service with their parts.

Sounds good, I will give my parts a thorough inspection and go from there. Are there any aftermarket brands to be wary of? Thanks guys.

"ometimes putting in new aftermarket parts is more of a gamble than used stuff."

Bingo.

I avoid aftermarket parts if at all possible.

Too many bad experiences.
