Can the fuel gauge on a 961 be calibrated somehow to match actual fuel level? Mine is reading off by better then a 1/4 tank. Just put in 5 gals from empty this morning and the gauge barely moved but it did move. Thinking of putting in another 5 gals so I know it's just above 1/2 a tank and try to calibrate for around that point if possible. Or do I need a new sending unit and gauge?

Tom,

You could try bending the float arm on the sender. Do you know if the gauge and sender are original? I just replaced the gauge on my Dad's 881 got it from Ford. It doesn't match exactly with the original sender, but I did some bending of the float arm and got it close.

The original sender doesn't have quite the range it should for the new gauge(does not read below 1/4 tank), but I know if the gauge gets down to 1/4 tank I need to start thinking head for the fuel barrel.

Thanks Brian. I did go ahead and bend the arm some. Took a couple times to get it close. With 10 gallons in it, a 17 gallon tank, I have it reading just a hair below half. I figure leaving it showing less then actual, when I ignore the gauge and don't see it till it shows empty, I'll still have a gallon or two to get it home to fill it.

You do not need a new sender and/or gage.

The gage is calibrated by bending the arm on the float. I did this when I installed it but it likely is not correct. It's somewhat of a trial and error process.

Do not allow the float to contact the bottom of the tank or vibration will wear a hole in the float over time.
