Need to overhaul the crank and possibly the #1 rod bearing journal. I ran the 158ci 3 cylinder gas engine low on oil and seized the rod to the crank. Would it be easier to remove the front axle/half first and disassemble as much of the engine before removing the engine from the transmission? Will be doing the splitting myself so any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

the way I'd do it is to pull the sheet metal and radiator, chock the front axle so it cannot tilt, block under the bell housing area such that the weight is relieved from the front axle, unbolt and remove the front axle - that leaves the engine accessible and at a nice working height for disassembly -

I have a lift truck which makes things relatively easy, but floor jacks will work - when you have all the peripherals off the engine if you don't have a forklift or some such, you can build a table out of 2X4's and plywood on casters that's just the right height to roll under the oil pan then use tapered wedges to hold the engine at the right height and attitude to loosen the bolts and roll the block away from the transmission -

I don't have a picture of doing that with an engine, but here's one using that technique on a transmission -

good luck, be careful - heavy stuff you're working with - others will doubtlessly have other helpful suggestion -
