4000D wrong? injection pump questions

All, I may have found the problem with my tractor. Need help to confirm. The pump is marked 3833 F380 which all the information I find shows is for a 175ci 3000D. Could this be why my machine runs so well cold but like poo when warm/hot? I do not know the history of this machine other than the condition it was in when I got it. I found a Delphi pump PN 3232978 used but good for a decent price. Anyone out there with details that can help a guy out?

The pumps may have different calibrations where as a 3000 pump on a 4000 could cause it to have a little less power, other wise it wouldn't have any effect on how the engine runs.

Be careful when purchasing used inj pumps, you could be buying the same problem you already have or worse.

As an aside, if I need to find a pump, does it matter what PN pump I get so long as it is for a 4000? I see 4 or 5 different ones listed. The one that is on the machine is 3833F380 which crosses over to a
3000. The one I have found is a Delphi 3232978 which is for a 4000. The chart I looked this up on is below.

As long as it's for a 4000 would be good enough for me.
Ford did up the power starting in 69 with head and cam changes, haven't read where any changes to the fuel system where made but there could have been some calibration changes made.
If there was a option I'd rather have a pump for 69 and newer, you could also look at 4600 pumps.

The 978 pump is for a 201ci engine.. the other, you already know is for a 175ci
You have to determine WHAT SIZE engine YOU have 1st.

As best as I can tell this is a 201 like it's supposed to be. Someone has worked on this thing along the way because it has yellow injectors instead of blue. I'm wondering 9f someone swapped pump and injectors when they valves were sticking thinking it was a fuel problem.

Dont get all wigged out about part numbers. I have swapped heads, or internal "guts" from one pump to an other without much hassle. Most of these pumps will interchange, but will need a little tweaking on the test stand to get the right fuel delivery, and timing advance. Send your old one out and have it looked at. Just check prices FIRST. A few calls will point you in the right direction. If someone is to high , walk away. If someone is way low, run. That DPA pump should be able to be be made run correctly for about 350-400 bucks. I can sell you a rebuilt one ready to rock and roll for 600. I also have good used heads that could be put in your housing. I can not stess this enough on this site. CALL AROUND. You will be surprised how easy and affordable some of us guys are out there. Talk with a few different people and pick who will treat you the way you would like, or you feel comfortable with. I dont charge anything to talk to someone on the phone and sometimes can help them find the problem without sending the pump off. Al 231/757/0064

Al, thanks for taking my call this weekend. The inlet screen was terribly clogged. Looked like it had mud in it! I was able to clean it out and I'm good to go.
