961 Lift Arm Question

My good friend Don Olson sent me this question via email and so I thought it'd be a good one for the group discussion here...

" Do you know anyone who has an original 961 rowcrop tractor. I need to look at original rear lower lift arms. My parts book says part number nca 555-B (two) arms are unique to rowcrop tractors (except high clearance row crop). Roger said his gold tractor has 1 original and I aftermarket arm. He does not know why the 961 rowcrop has unique lift arms. Not a big deal but I would like to find out what the difference is , such as why they are different than 801 series or other models. "

He does not know why the 961 rowcrop has unique lift arms.

The 961 does not have unique arms, They are the same as all the row crop models (models within the 700, 900, 701 and 901 series) except for the high clearance row crops.

The rear axles are higher off the ground on a row crop than on the regular ag chassis models, so they need longer arms to be able to lower implements down to the same depth. The high clearance row crops were even higher than the regular row crops, so they needed even longer arms.

I don't believe this is correct, Sean! As nearly as I can see it, all 01 series tractors used the same lower lift link. The row crops had special drop brackets the arms attached to in front to make up for the additional height above the ground.

I don't know that I can answer your question directly, but two years ago I was refurbishing the lifts on a couple of row-crops and rather than welding new ball ends on both ends of the original arms decided to purchase new lift arms - I found the aftermarket arms had holes drilled in different positions than the originals - they would have probably worked, but I had the replacement arms welded and new holes drilled in the original location -

also, doesn't the sway bar on the row crop require a pin thru arm and associated hole that the regular utility does not?

Im not sure I understand the question completely, I can grab a pic of mine if that would help. I'd go along with what Larry says for the most part. I'm not sure if their longer or not, but they do mount lower then the axle as they would on say an 801.

Pic is on a 701.

Larry - Parts site shows that they had separate part numbers, I assumed it was for different lengths due to different axle heights:

NAA had a single part number for both sides:
9N555B - Link Assy., Hydraulic, Lower, Lift, NAA, Years: 01-JAN-53-31-DEC-54

1955 and up ag chassis had separate part numbers for left and right side:
D0NN555D - Link Assy., Hydraulic, Lower, Lift, RH, Start Year: 01-JAN-55
D0NN555C - Link Assy., Hydraulic, Lower, Lift, LH, Start Year: 01-JAN-55

Row crops, except for Hi clearance had this a single part number for both sides:
NCA555B (superseded by D0NN555D) - LIFT ARM Link Assy., Hydraulic, Lower, Lift, Row Crop, Except High-Clearance, Start Year: 01-JAN-55

And the High Clearance row crops had a different single part number for both sides:
NCA556A - Link Assy., Hydraulic, Lower, Lift, Row Crop Hi-Clearance Only, Start Year: 01-JAN-57

I'll put my 2 cents worth. Don't have a 801 handy but both of my 4 cylinder 4000's have riveted brackets for the sway chains on the arms and my 971 uses the special bolt that connects the lift arm to the lower arms for the sway chains. Could the different part numbers be a result of that? I don't know if the divided arms were around for the 801's tho. Greg NE

As I see it there is some merit to what you are saying for the 00 series and older. But beginning in Jan of '59 the lift arm uses the same part number (313101) for lift arms on all models. Maybe I should have said there was a running change during production that started in January of '59. After that all 01 series lift arms were identical as I read the NH arts web.

My two cents worth. Since the pocket to hold the snap pin is no longer used on the lift arm, there is only one lift arm , fitting either side. Yes you can put them on wrong. The outer end should be slightly down and in. There is a difference between the lift rods, the row crop being longer, and on the right side, the bottom half being the longer. The lift arms have three holes. The row crop uses the middle hole. The standard uses the back hole with a bracket in the front holes for the check chains. The picture in one of these post has the lift arms mounted wrong.
