Ford 4400 Distributor Issues

For anyone that can assist. I had distributor issues on the 3 cyl Ford 4400 before and troubleshot through help to the distributor. I ordered the mechanical advance distributor and changed it and all worked perfect. The problems started again and replaced again. All and all, I have rewired, changed the coil and resistor, and read voltages and all is well. However, today the tractor started acting up again. From running perfect to a low rough idle and barely running. Carb fuel is perfect and verified on a relatively new zenith carb. Tractor timing is set and all plugs and wires are new.

I have contacted them and they are checking with the manufacturer and was wondering what could be causing this and if anyone else has experienced these issues. Thanks

I haven't heard the most important piece of information before you throw money and parts at a problem.

Have you checked spark?

Have you checked spark?

Sorry, the spark is strong right at start and then it seems to weaken. Weaken meaning the spark is very little and inconsistent across the gap. The idle starts strong for maybe a second and then it surges at a low range (barely running). Cannot add and throttle to change the idle. I have done this several times to confirm.

I bought the coil and attached resistor together and I do not notice heat. The problems are happening with the engine cold now since letting it run is a struggle and will shut off.

If something is wrong with the coil, or resistor they will get hot quick. The capacitor (they are usually cheap) can be bad right out of the box. Look at the points, and see if they look burnt.

I replaced the coil and resistor a few months ago. My output is a 6 volts to the coil right now. Not sure what capacitor is referred to in the other email. I did jump the 12v input with no change to the issue. As for the points, do not see any burning.

Check the Distributor cap for cracks; It would have come from the factory with resistance made in the wires. If you have replaced the wire you will have lost that. It also needs the wire from the solenoid to the coil. that puts 12 volts at cranking. If you have replaced the coil with an IC14SB you will not need the res in the wire. Check the condenser to make sure it is grounded good [ screw tight]. I have used many of the mech replacement dists with no problems

So I ended up changing the condenser and it worked fine. Based on history, I have gone through 2 condensers on this new distributor and the old vacuum advance distributor had no issues. I could assume it is bad condensers or could it be the 12 volt universal coil and resistor I installed from yesterday's tractor? I also picked up a NAPA IC14SB based on another article and was considering installing. I have no inline resistors in the wiring and looking for options to prevent this from happening again real soon. I appreciate all the help on this issue.

Coil and resistor combos should not damage a condenser.

I would remove any resistors or resistor wire ( thousand series used a ball of resistor wire ), and run straight with the ic14sb coil.

I put brand new out of the box points, and condenser in old car one time, and it wouldn't even start. Put the old condenser back in, it fired right up, and ran like a champ.
