S L O W Hydraulics

I have an early '60s 4cyl 2000 tractor with built-in hydraulics. The controls are under the seat on the right. I have a small "V" plow which is raised by a 2" cylinder. The hydraulics run very slowly, when either raising or lowering the plow. Is this a common trait of these tractors, or should I be looking at something else?
Thanks,
Tex

what you need to be looking at is some math.

New, perfect, at rated rpm.. you are dealing with a 4gpm ...

Now look at the volume displacement of a rather large cyl. ( 2" is a big rod ). Remember.. oil is occupying the space the rod was in..

OK, here's the math: the formula for the volume of a cylinder is: 3.14 X radius X height. so 3.14 X 1 X 10 = 31.4. A gallon = 213 cubic inches. 213 X 4 (gpm) = 852 cubic inches / minute. 852 divided by 31.4 = 27.43. This means that the cyl should be able to raise and lower around 13 times / minute, or around 4 seconds / cycle. It doesn't come anywhere close to that. So, any other ideas, or is my math wrong?
Thanks,
Tex

One of the first things to check is for water in the sump. Just loosen the drain plug until either oil or water comes out.
