601 stering shaft

Rut row...wanted to replace steering wheel on my 601 mutt, took off nut and pulled and half of the shaft came out with it. I'm not an expert on these steering assemblies but I'm thinking this ain't supposed to happen. I looked at replacement shafts and they don't seem to have this type of coupler on them. I bought this tractor a few months ago and just now got to do a little work on it so I know very little about it. Any ideas on what happened here and what I need to do to repair this?

I have never seen that.
I wonder if your shaft could have come off of a forklift or something.
They did make a different steering tube, etc for forklifts.

If it is a forklift shaft will the rest of the column be the same. In other words will I be able to just replace this shaft with a standard one?
 
I can't say.
But I would guess it would be the same.
I would think it would be cost prohibitive to manufacture a whole new box for just a few forklifts.
Questions:
Is this a manual or power steering box?
Is something wrong with it that you want to replace it?
They do sell a complete steering shaft for the manual boxes here at YT but if it works ok as is I don't know what you would gain by changing it.

Also.. is the coupler damaged, or can you simply slip it back together and go?
 
Thanks UD and SG for the replies, but I have the answer. A fine gentleman that owned the tractor previously got a hold of me and explained that this tractor, at one time, had a aftermarket Char-Lynn power steering unit on it. The power steering went out and the column was converted to a manual type. He said he rebuilt the box and had it working great so I should be able reattach the coupling, adjust the bearing shims and be good to go.
