3000 hydraulic line help

'72 3000 diesel. I am looking for a permanent fix for the small hydraulic line leaving the pump. After 3 new rubber/compression nut replacements I am done. Before you ask, yes the tube has a groove in it and I know it will never work (I had to try) until I replace the tube. I am not interested in replacing the tube, unless I can replace it with a hose. Is there a fitting that would mate up with the pump without the use of any kind of compression fitting? Or any suggestions to permanently fix this?
 
You sound determined, but I fixed one for a neighbor last summer. I got him a new steel line and a new compression nut. It all went on with no problem. You have to remove the floor board. His old line also had a groove in it. New line was around $80 and the fitting was around $35-$40, I think. I don't believe any other kind of fitting will thread into the hydraulic pump and seal. Go with the OEM style, is my suggestion.

It's a common problem on those.
What happens is the metal clamping part of
that nut digs into the line and eats away at
it, especially if you try to slide it back
off once it's been used. It's best to cut
them off if you need to remove them.
I know you don't want to be told to buy a
new line but GaryinNC already said it and I
agree with him.
I would do that before I cobbled a hose on
it somehow as a hose and fittings wont be
cheap either.
One last thing you might try is go to a good
hydraulic house and buy a small 4 inch chunk
of steel line the same size as the original.
And buy a compression union made for
hydraulics.
Then replace the first few inches of the
line where it goes into the pump - and buy
another new nut. Follow the instructions on
the compression union - get it snug and only
1/4 or 1/2 turn more - something like that -
ask them at the hyd shop.
If you do that please post back with your
results. It's just an idea I've had for a
common problem on those.

That is a very good model tractor.
 
Replacing the steel tube will fix your problem. Not a big deal. You could have paid for it with the cash you wasted on pressure nuts.
 
Looks like this will be a chore. I have the floor pan off and compression nut at rear off. I will have to take power steering lines off and manipulate front loader hoses at the very least to remove and install tube. I decided not to remove the old until I get the new one here so I can do all this at one time. It appears to have the same compression nut on both ends. Correct?

I have been on a fair number of forums on a variety of subjects, but this forum is the most difficult I have ever tried to use.

Are complaining about the forum software itself or the responses you are getting to your questions?

If you are complaining about the ease of use of the forum software, try switching to modern view if you are currently using classic view, or vice-versa. You can click on a link on the top right of the page that says "Classic View" or "Modern View" to switch from whichever view you are currently using. Unfortunately, in either view, the ability to edit your post once you post it is disabled, so you have to add a new post telling everybody what correction you want to make. Another thing that might be frustrating you is that you aren't allowed to post pictures until you posted a certain number of posts, which I think is 10.
 
Jbo, I avoided this forum for years after finding it because I didn't know about "Modern view".

Welcome to the forum. If it were me and replacing the line went against my grain, I was thinking of tapping the pump housing for NPT and go with JIC fittings and lines. But now you're back to likely as much money as the replacement tube and more work to boot!
 

I wish you had posted this earlier. Last night I ordered two compression nuts and a new tube. :(

Haven't you been saying all along that the pump end of the existing line has a compression fitting? I haven't looked at one in a while and was going by what you were saying.
 
Ordered a new tube and two new compression nuts. After inspection of old tube after removal I discovered the groove on the pump end is actually a groove for a little metal ring, just like the bottom end (which was complete and holding). New tube has no ring groove and compression nuts have no little ring, just two little copper rings that go in either end of the rubber seal. So I am thinking (just like the first time I replaced a compression nut a while back), this will never hold. Sure enough, it did not hold. The bottom popped off this time. Now I am out over $130.00 (not to mention much needed tractor work time)and still not fixed. At this point, I am wondering who's bright idea was it to not use the groove and metal ring. And who thought this was a better idea. I am counting time and money lost as a learning experience and will now proceed with trying to find a fitting that will thread up and have a hose built at a local hose house. Just for a little background, I am not someone who had never worked on equipment before. I have been keeping old tractors and vehicles patched up and running for near 40 years. But never worked on a Ford 3000 hydraulic tube before.
 
Just found this site and find it helpful. Am looking for a way as well to replace existing with some type of rubber hydraulic hose. Did you have any luck?
