3000 deisel temp sender

Wondering if the temperature sender for a 71 3000 diesel is a common item I might be able to pick up at a local auto parts store. My temp gauge isn't working and getting ready to pull it into the shop for a look see. Thinking I can check the gauge itself by swapping the fuel gauge wires.

You can check the gauge by putting the sending unit side to ground. The gauge should go to max temp.

A quick grounding won't hurt a thing. Pay attention and maybe release the connection as soon as the gauge goes near full hot. Don't hook it up and go to town for coffee.

Ditto...

Ground it long enough for it to make a full sweep and call it good. That's all you need to know anyway.

OK I took you guys word and grounded the gauge, happy to say it worked as advertised. Then I checked the resistance of the wire and sender with an ohm meter hooked up at the gauge. It read about 2.5K, unhooked the wire at the sensor and it went to infinity which told me the wire was OK.

This takes me back to the original question.. New Holland wants $25.30 for a $10.00 sensor. Don't really want to wait for an on-line order but don't care to pay over twice what the durn thing is selling for from any place other than New Holland. Anyone had any luck crossing it to something than can be bought from an auto parts store?
