Plug Wires on a 2000

Ford 2000; 3 cyl. gas; 4/1...When I bought my tractor the seller threw in what was not installed out of a carb kit plus new plug wires. He got them from Steiner and said that although they were the correct wires, he could not get them to fit, and stay, on the plugs. He was right, I couldn't get them to work either. Too tight a fit in the hole so would not go down and snap on the plugs. Is there a magic formula for getting the boots down on the plugs so the connections engage? I was thinking of wire brushing down the rubber boots enough so that they would fit better and wonder if someone else has done something similar, or better. Would line not to have to invest in new boots but that could be a last resort. Many thanks for advice on this fix.

I have not tried that set from Steiner, but have had zero success with tailored aftermarket 3 cylinder wire sets. OEM
fit and work. Spendy but they fit and work.
