We took a risk.

My father and I have wanted to move some trees around to make some shelter belts and fence lines along roads etc. Love wildlife and my wife and I have some land we are going to build on so decided to go in on this machine. Probably should have rented but I often don't know when I will have extra time so thought it would be enjoyable to have the capabilities. Will probably have to sell the sos 3000 now to pay for it but I have enough tractors. Ot
Anyone have experience with these? Tips and tricks appreciated.

Don't have any experience with that machine but have experience with the company. The company was founded by a Gary Vermeer, in the Dutch community of Pella, IA. Now being run by second generation Vermeer (Mary) with 3rd generation in waiting. It you received an operators manual you can rest assured it will do everything they say it will do.

Learn how to use it, then go out a make some money with it (especially if the neighbors see it). I bought a 1971 Ford 4500 TLB, and even though it needs some work before its useable. When the neighbors seen it sitting outside, neighbors were stopping by, and asking if I could do some work for them (mainly digging out big tree stumps).

I have lots of experience running spaces. Carefree is the brand I am most familiar with, but they are pretty similar. I have only run skid steer mounted diggers. If it is a 30 inch you can dig maples and oaks up to 2 1/2 -3" caliper. Evergreens 10'-12'.

Now is the time to be using this spade, before bud break. The ground needs to be moist, but not wet. I don't see any place for weights to be mounted. You want the machine to stay on the ground when the spades go into the ground. If the machine raises up ball size will decrease. Good luck. Nathan

...actually you're going to get to the root of the situation.
Have a Vermeer 3 pt chipper handle a 9" log with variable hydraulic feed, works great, solid, minimal maintenance. Just change the hydraulic oil on cue, grease the zerks. Good solid equipment if reasonable care given.

do not let the spade come up on you'

put spade one down untel the spade start up. back off and let it set down. put spade 3 down and back up'
spade 2 down and back up, then spade 4 down and back up

go back to spade one and do the same round.
sometine you have to make 4 ot 5 rounds. cutting roots and dirt.

if you can rest a tractor loaded on the fram to hold the spade down it will help

i had a 20 3 pt on a tractor.

do not rry to dig bigger than a 4 inch tree. this would be app a 10 foot white pine or spruce
a 3 inch would be better
very good machine

Definitely a neat machine, and if the sale of a sos tractor will pay for it you must have got it pretty reasonable cause sos tractors go pretty cheap

Not cheap but only covering my half of the tree spade. Hoping to get 1500 to 2 for the sos.

Thanks for all the comments. I hope to make some nice windbreaks.

Well that sounds like a reasonable price for the sos, that was a later one so better than the early ones but still makes me laugh when I see people asking 6k for one
