Sherman Repair Parts

I have a 641 Workmaster with a Sherman Hi/Lo in it. Somehow before I bought it, somebody got the Sherman shifter out of the gate, fork or something like that inside. It is in direct drive which makes the tractor useable, but I would like to fix it. Probably split the tractor this weekend and pull the Sherman out. The shifter moves back and forth a little bit, but it is in the inside position and I can't pull it out to where it should be in the direct drive position. I think I may know what happened, but was wondering if anyone knows of someone who overhauls them, or has parts to fix Shermans. Thank you for any help or replies.

I have purchased parts for my Sherman trans from oldfordtractor http://oldfordtractors.com/ before. Was pleased with the outcome.

You should be able to access the Sherman by removing the steering box and pulling the top cover off. That option would be a bit easier than splitting the tractor. Might even be able to fix the problem from there.

Several years ago the local dealer worked on my tractor's steering box, and when it came back the Sherman was stuck in one range. After some back and forth discussions the tractor was taken back to the shop and fixed at no charge; the mechanic that had done the repair had somehow got the shift forks/rails out of order, causing the Sherman to be stuck in one range.

As Big said access thru top of steering box.If your sherman has been in the same position for a long time and you have an open rail top cover, on the left side of the photo, it might be possible that the exposed rail might have some rust on it. If so clean it up and try before pulling the top cover open. I have pulled the top cover off and took in out thru thru steering box hole and it's very tight.
John Smith's old ford tractor site has a very good write up on the shermans and also sells some sherman parts. You can look at his sherman rebuild pages for your parts to check for wear.

Hey Thanks guys. That's great advice and a big help. Hope it's a minor problem. I've purchased parts from John at old Ford before. He is a top notch guy who really knows how to take care of his customers. I'll look up his Sherman page.

Anyone out there know where I could possibly get the caged roller bearings for a Sherman reverser tranny? Is it possible to replace them with newer needle bearings. Also a source for the thrust washers for it.
