Update: got all my wiring, starter and coil replaced. Turns over fast as can be now. Still wouldn't fire. Pull started it before the new starter went in and ran terrible. So after getting the new starter in and still wouldn't start I pulled the plugs and they were sooted up. Cleaned the plugs up and now it barely fires but won't stay running back fires and carb spits out smoke.

Ps: Posted this in the original thread not sure if y'all could see, new to this page

Loosen your distributor locking bolt and fire it up. Rotate the distributor back and forth and see if you can find a sweet spot. Possibly your timing reference is messed up or the dist is in backwards.........I think you can get them 180 out on that engine......been awhile. Backfiring to me has always been firing when the intake valve is open...timing or sticking valve problem.

I'd encourage you to buy a new set of plugs - I've had a lot of trouble with plugs that appear perfectly serviceable being the problem associated with rough running and non starting -

I was thinking timing but I can't imagine. Nothing has changed and I had it running like a top when I first picked it up last year. It got harder and harder to start and after early summer it has been sitting. New condenser, rotor, cap, plugs, plug wires. Starter was definitely bad so replaced that turns over great now. Found some bad wiring and replaced all that. Based on how it was running when I pulled it to start it I replaced the 6v coil with a 12v and removed the resistor wire. Everything on the tractor was original and had lots of corrosion.

I've had two sets of plugs in it but since I replaced the coil
haven't tried a fresh set. Brand new set I put in were sooted
real bad after running like crap last week. Maybe worth trying
a new set.

I had 3400 gas in for repair while back that had steering leak, O that's not important but guy said missed of and on while using and did for me too. Had new cap, rotor, points.cond, plugs and coil. Messed with while put plug wires on and ran like did when new.

Try rotating the distributor without loosening the bolt. if it moves, even if only when you apply a lot of force, it could have drifted out of timing on its own over time.

Do you have china points in there? If so, you must clean them once a week or they will corrode up and make it misfire.
