Strange lever on left side of 63 2000 Diesel

Just purchased a 63 Ford 4cyl Diesel tractor and it has what looks to me a lever under the starter solenoid. Acording to the serial number it is the industrial model 4 speed with no adjustable front axle.

Anyone have an idea what the lever is?

Sherman combo auxilery trans shift lever, low range, direct, & high range. Check out Smiths Old Fords website.

Hit submit before I was done. If it's still there, look at the plaque that should be mounted on the dash below the steering wheel. It explains what you have. Right now it's in the low side.

Thanks, I ordered parts, service, and operation manuals and none had it listed. I tried moving it and could not get it to move but did not try forcing it. I picked up tractor, front loader, and box blade for $1500 so I guess I did not due to bad.
i didn't have any brakes but 15 minutes with a brake spoon fixed that. Runs good starts right up but it kind up hunts a RPM so I am guessing it could use a fuel pump or needs to governor looked at.

Looks like a Sherman Combination as said. Nice option.
Also looks like it used to have power steering.
If you're going to use the loader I'd put that back on for sure.

Good deal price-wise, but if you have buyer's remorse let me know.
I'd be happy to give you your money back if you deliver. ;)

He gave me the cylinders for the power steering. Pump is still on tractor but bearings are shot. I think I have found a new one for ~$400 plus the hoses.

I am in Daytona Beach and tractors are hard to come by here.

As others have said it's a Sherman. You are now in low range if you pull the lever back, thru the neutral detent, it will be in high range. If you move the lever to the neutral detent and pull the lever away from the tractors body, about 3/8 Of an inch or so, and move the lever back you will be in normal range. This will give you four gears in each range. This will also give you different PTO speeds in the different ranges.
I know what you mean about hunting up a tractor in the beach areas. My son is in Delray Beach and he's always looking for tractors for me and they are far and few inbetween.

I'll give you your money back, AND I'll come get it. You did good. Welcome to the forum.

Check out a Cadone Power Steering pump. Number 96-6051. I know it will fit the 4 cyl gassers (I have one) and I think it work on your diesel. Cost should be about $125. Two issues with the pump. You will need to remove the aluminum restrictor in outlet port. I threaded in a large easy-out and pulled it out with a pair of pliers. It is just a lite press fit. Also, you will need to sand the casting smooth at the outlet to let it seal on the o-ring. Other than that, mine bolted up just fine.

BTW - its a new pump, not a rebuilt one.

Others have answered your questions about the Sherman.

Not certain where you live but you will need to install a properly sized battery if you want it to start reliably in cold weather.

Dad has a 64 4000 row crop. We could not stop all the power steering leaks. We finally removed the PS completely.

I would replace all the battery cables. They don't look like they are in good condition anymore.

(quoted from post at 07:02:29 02/03/17)I will either have to buy or make new lines also.

Tisco makes rubber hoses for these system. YT carries them. Some prefer the steels line, but I have they hoses and they have works fine for 5 years now.

That is an understatement. The whole tractor has had a farmers touch. Nails for cotter pins etc. Has an Allice Chalmers radiator in it wich was too think for the grill so they left it out. Car tires on the front.
