Ford 4000D update

All, thanks again for the help on the new to me 4000D. Just a little update on it. Got it apart and the #3 exhaust valve was BAD stuck. Few days of penetrant didn't do much to help it. Took it to the diesel shop to get worked on. All 3 exhaust valves ended up being tight in the guides. #3 had to be driven out and found that the guide is cracked. Off to the machine shop for a new guide to be bored and installed. Someone showed this old girl some love along the way, block was bored and had sleeves installed somewhere along the way. I did notice that it looks like the pistons and valves have been kissin' cousins somewhere along the way. I measured the old head gasket and someone swapped out the .037" one for the early tractors for the .056" one on the later tractors. I'm keeping a photo log of this and will get stuff posted up and shared as soon as I have her running. Hopefully in the next week or 10 days depending on the machine shop.

On a side note, what's this old girl worth when done? She will have decent rubber on all 4 corners, manual steering, 8 spd trans and independent PTO. Will also have new wiring harness (she has no wiring at all now). Not sure that it matters but tractor has 6.00-16 fronts and will have 12.4R36 rears when I'm done.

Hi Brian,
Good update.
How do the bores look - ring ridge, piston slop, etc?
Now would be the time to throw a set of rings and rod bearings in it if it needs it.
I know good head work isn't cheap but in the grand scheme of things it's not a lot of dough considering you mentioned you bought the tractor cheap in the first place.
As for the value, it's hard to say without more info. You say it has good rubber all round.
But appearance counts too - tin, paint, seat, etc.
Around here I would say a decent but average 4000 would start about $4K and go up from there.
I sold two of them in the last 4 years.
The first one was a good straight tractor with decent rubber and tin but not prettyfied I got $4400 for.
The pretty one I got $6500 for - new paint, motor, seat, and tires all around. Both were 8 sp w/IPTO.
I made more on the ugly one than the pretty one. Learned the hard way that there's no money to be made in restoring them.
Both of them had old style, side arm PS - which is easy to add btw. I did not give the front weights away on the pretty one.
Yes do post some photos. We like photos here.

I have about 300 in parts to get it back together. It looks like someone didn't check clearances on the exhaust side of the valves as they were all tight. The bores have not discernible ring ridge, just carbon build up from running so poor. Everything else checked out, I'm not cheaping out on it for sure. The tires I will be putting on it are actually 13.6R28s, not 12.4s. Getting a decent preowned pair on rims for $200. I will decide what I do with the old girl when she's ready to go. I may keep here and sell the 3000....or may keep them both. I like the idea of having 2 tractors. Too many uses for just one! I'm taking pictures and uploading them to my web server. I'll get a page loaded here soon. In the interim, here are some pics of the top of the engine.

Great photos.
As you mentioned it does look like the pistons were kissing the valves.
It's a tough call on whether to keep the 4000 vs 3000. A 3000 is a lot smaller and is just so nimble and handy. And I prefer the live pto over independent pto.
On the other hand, a 4000 is much easier to work on, has outstanding brakes, is bigger, more stable and has more power which are all a plus.
If you sell either one you will miss it.
So you have my permission to keep them both :)
Post some photos of the tractor.
PS,
Did you mean 13.6 38s?
16.9 28s might do the job but 13.6 28s would be awfully small.

No sitar, I meant 36s. I will get shots of the tractor as is later this morning. I went by the shop and got shots of the cracked guide while I dropped off the parts to do the valve job.

Here are pix of the busted guide. I keep forgetting to take my electronic tether to the shop to get pics of the tractor, but I will eventually remembert.
