I assume you're looking at the SOS model with the single front wheel?
I see it has power steering. That's another nice option.
I'd think it was worth that price.

Looks like it's a diesel.
I have never seen that style of single front
wheel before. Is it aftermarket?
Most SFW I have seen were suported on one
side only.
Yeah that looks like a good price.
Those 12.4s look goofy though.
13.6 or 14.9s would look a lot better

Yes, diesel. Aftermarket or shop-built front wheel support. Factory was only one side. Maybe something adapted from a s.p. windrower? I bet it has 12.4's because they're cheaper than 13.6's or 14.9's... 12.4's not only look goofy, but they can't effectively put the power available to the ground (except maybe in ideal conditions). No drawbar on it, either. Still a good price.

Tires are very small. Could even be 11.2s.

Still, even with a diesel engine and undersized tires it is a very low price unless it has serious issues.

All things being equal, no smoke, good OP, leaks, etc, I would probably take a 4 cyl diesel over a gasser. Kenny has an 841-S/D that he's switching the tranny and rear end in making it an 861D.
I think it will be a honey of a tractor when he's done
On a 3 cyl it would be a toss up.

I'm not fond of that early 4 cylinder diesel. Six-eight less HP, expensive parts, and, of course, balancer/crankshaft problems.

9** fenders do sit lower but, with the very undersized tires, it's hard to say from the photo whether it has the correct fenders or not.

A couple of thoughts:
Not sure there was that much of a difference in hp ratings between them.
Tractor Data shows the NE power test details on both the gas and diesel models and says it's more like 5.
Regardless,
I've always thought the 801s, gassers especially, produced a bit more hp than that platform could effectively put to the ground. Kind of like the old saying about an alligator mouth and a mocking bird a$$.
They could put it through the pto though which I'll admit does count.
Big difference in fuel use/max hp. Like about 1.4 gph.
As for the balancing problems I think they got that worked out in the later models with the balancer they added.
At this point in their careers those old diesels are kinda like the SOSs of that era - if they're still running today they'll likely run a long while yet.
Anyway, I've always thought an 861D with ps would make a great mowing tractor.
Put my finish mower on it and leave it there.
I wouldn't part with my 3000 for one but would love to have one just the same.
