Ford 4000 - 1964 Year Model Questions

Friend of mine is looking at a Ford 4000 with front loader. It is gas, has two stage clutch and PTO (thought it might be an industrial version? ). IMHO the price is very low. As far as I know the tractor runs, drives and the loader works. However in the pic, the loader is being held up with a 2 X 6 or something.

What can you tell me about this tractor as he looks at it? Anything to especially lookout for when looking/test driving it? Will point him to this thread too.

All info is much appreciated.

Thanks!

That's an all purpose tractor with an industrial loader. It is not an industrial tractor model. Somebody probably propped the loader up in case they had to get at the points, carb, or some such. Just have him check how the loader functions along with everything else.
Make sure both clutch stages work properly under load.

Might it be the light industrial 4000? The front hubs look big to me. Can't see enough of the front axle on this screen to be sure if it's the adjustable or non-adjustable.

It could be that. Those front hubs are large.

And I usually spot large front hubs from quite a distance.

I think I see a hay spike sticking out the back which supports your assumption.....industrials don't have 3 pts, around here anyway. That would make the front axle light unless it has been replaced. I think I see the hyd pump off the front spline of the crank shaft. Wonder where the hydraulic fluid is stored........regular sump? My last 4000 was farm and had the tube loader with the front mounted pump like that and the fluid was stored inside the loader tubes. That design really put a load on the front axle.

PO had overdone it and broke the front axle in half so he welded it up, turned it over and stuck it back on. Really a funny steering/looking thing. Other thing guy said it didn't have any oil pressure.....bought it non running. it was the rear main, not the oil gauge as I had hoped. Oh and the Coup de Grace was it had an SOS...but a little fixing up and that worked just fine. Glad I got it for a song....one of those "just gotta have" knee jerks we go through sometimes, but I did want a conventional tranny.....none to be had around here.

I agree with other it's a light industrial same as my '63. It will have heavy duty one piece axle, heavier radius arms. The front end was made to handle a loader. Other than checking normal wear since I don't see wheel weight for loader counter balance so assume the rear tires are loaded. Check around the valve stem area for leaks signs of rust.

I zoomed in on the picture and enhanced it a little and it does look like the light industrial front axle, there are no bolt holes that the adjustable axle has.

I think I see the hyd pump off the front spline of the crank shaft. Wonder where the hydraulic fluid is stored........regular sump?

The loader frame itself should be the sump for the hydraulics.

Okay. Guess nobody around here did that. Thanks for the info. Does make sense. Why wouldn't Ford offer such like a guy with a FEL and a box blade for dirt/gravel work.

This 1964 4000 (4130) was given to me by an elderly lady last
year. I am about half way through rebuilding it. The only I can say
is some parts are hard to come by, rare as Hens teeth and if
you do $$. I was lucky to find one in a junk yard same year
model for a few parts i needed.

soundguy; I looked high and low for the spindles and the parking
brake hardware plus a few other small items. This junk tractor
had all the stuff I was missing plus a like new reversing
transmission.
