4600 Diesel

I just purchased a ford 4600 diesel and wanted to change the hydraulic filter and fluid. I see it has a spin on filter is this the only one? The IT manual shows 6.8 gls of fluid. Does that sound right and what type or brand of hydraulic fluid do ya'll use. I also have a leak from the left brake rod at the axle housing. It looks to have a seal/boot on the outside, is this this only seal?
Thanks:

Change the spin on filter under the left foot board.
Any brand of universal tractor hydraulic fluid that meets or exceeds Ford specs. G134
One brake rod seal, NH# 82037652
Replace the brake seal while changing the hyd oil, it's the same oil.
My 4000 book calls for 32.4 qrts, a little over 8 gal, 4600 should be that much or more.
It's a good idea to change the transmission fluid at the same time, it should hold around 4.12 gal of the same oil as the rear axle and hyd system.
I normally get 3 five gal buckets of hyd oil, that gives me a few gallons to have on hand if I need to add some later.

6.8 gallons actually sounds a little low. The Operator's manual for my '73 4000, which is the prior model to your 4600, says 33.9 quarts, which is about 8.5 gallons, and mine took just about that much to fill the last time I changed the fluid. I don't think that the 4600 has a smaller rear end than my 4000, nor do I think that it has anything extra in terms of hardware in there that would displace more fluid, so I would buy 2 of the 5 gallon buckets of UTF just to be safe.

The next smaller models, the 2000 & 3000, show show 24.6 quarts in my manual, which is closer to the 6.8 gallons that you mention. Does your manual cover only the 4600, or does it cover the 2600 and 3600 models as well? Maybe you're reading the number for those smaller models?

Yes that external seal is the only seal for that brake rod. It's got a metal band in it made of spring steel that keeps the rubber tight against the outside of the opening, and another smaller metal band at the narrow end that keeps it tight against the rod.

I have a dipstick that I thought was what you measured the hydrualic fluid with. I thought this was for both hydrualics and transmission. Just asking this my first ford diesel tractor have had and do have other colors tractors.

Hydraulics and transmission are separate compartments. Where is the stick? In the transmission top cover or near the rock shaft on the left side? If it's the latter, then that is the hydraulics.... but most x600 series tractors did not have a stick unless someone added it from a 10 series.
