1966 Ford 4000D

All, going to look at a project 4000D this afternoon. It's a 1966 model, 8 spd Basildon tractor. Has a stuck valve and bent push rod that need attention. Price is right and I'm up for the challenge. One thing I see is that 65-67 tractors are rated for less HP than the 68+ tractors. Can someone tell me why this is? I can't seem to find any useful info on the reason for the uprate.
 
Fords uprated the tractors in July 1968, doing quite a number of mods on the 2,3 and 5000 as they had been very problematical. The 4000 was the best of the bunch and at times, when we were demonstrating, it would perform better than the 5000. The engine is an absolute lugger and would not die.

In 1968 they changed the tinwork and improved the breathing, changed the intake manifold all of which gave them a bit more hp.

The 4000 has been my favorite tractor of that whole series right up to the 4610.
 
Thanks. I have a later 3000D with an inline pump that has been good to me. Looking to add a 2nd tractor to do more of the heavier work and mowing so that I don't have to play the swap the implement game with the 3000D.
 

They made several changes in the 69 models, cam, head, intake for better breathing along with different inj and pump mods.
You'll come to love the 4000 over your 3000, heavier front and rear axles make it much more stable on rough or hilly ground, inboard wet brakes have great stopping and holding power over 3000's drum brakes, independent pto allows you the engage or disengage pto without using the clutch.
Only draw back to that model is it's power assist steering, although it steers fine it's slower than the 3000's and some complain about the extra free play in the wheel compared to full power steering.
4000SU is a 3000-4000 mix, has 4000 hp and wet brake rear axle with 3000 front axle, steering and 28" rims.
I have both 4000 and 4000SU.
