Got the crankshaft out, and the crankshaft is no good. The destroyed number 1 rod bearing caused the journal to be worn down about .110" undersize. Other than that the rest of the engine looks really good. My concern is a replacement crankshaft, if I can't find a good, used oem Ford crank how good are the aftermarket crankshafts is there a aftermarket brand to stay away from. Also is there a aftermarket engine rebuild kit with pistons that maybe better than another.

On another note I've heard of a conversion that can make the 4 lever control backhoe to a 2 lever setup. I am curious as to what it takes to convert it (for a future project like I really need another one LOL).

The big pieces of the rod bearing that are left.

ptfarmer,

I'm not making a suggestion here, just telling about something I did a long time ago. I had a 1955 Dodge with whatever size V-8 engine was in it. It had a bad rod knock when I got it and I ended up deciding that the throw on the damaged crankshaft was toast. I bought a re-ground crankshaft with matched over-sized rod bearings and installed it in the engine. I drove the car for about three years after that with no problems.

I have no idea where or if you could find a reground crankshaft for your engine, but the one I bought was considerably less expensive than a new one, and much better than a used one.

Good luck with your project.

They do make new, aftermarket crankshafts for it. I'm looking around for a good, used Ford crankshaft that can be turned down if needed. I'm not very sure of the quality of the new aftermarket crankshafts. I'd hate to buy a new aftermarket crank, and it destroys the entire engine because its not made as good as a original.

I have run cranks that have been built up (welded) with no problems. It will add about $100 to the cost of having the crank ground.

I've heard of company's spray weld while it's turning to build material up to grind down. Kind of a funky looking process but it appeared to work

I can weld the crank, but I don't have access to a crank grinder. On another note is the torque converter missing something (I think it is).
